History:
Sage Angirasa was the son of of lord Brahma Deva. He is the seventh son of Vasudha. Tara is the wife of Guru. Bharathwaja is the son of Guru. Guru is the minister of Indra, the lord of Devas. Temperamentally, Guru is Sattvic tending towards harmony. He rides an elephant. His chariot is pulled by a golden horse.  He caused the snake yaga prematurealy terminated and saved Indira's crown. He is the fifth from sun, a very large planet coming round the sun. He stops in each constellation for a year. On his four hands are the book and the rosary. It is ancient practice to worship Lord Dakshinamurthy as Guru. Guru is also praised as Brahaspathi, Vyazhan and Mantri. The Period of Guru's influences is 16 years. He is the lord of sagittarius and pisces. Those who are desirous of fame, acquisition of land, reknown and excellence of word, shoul worship Dakshinamurthy or Guru. Donate a yellow cloth, wear Good or the gem stone Pushparagam, fast on Thursdays and recite Dakshinamurthi Stotram Guru, When pleased, blesses one with wisdom, marriage, fruits, happiness, high-post, sons, riches, honours and a life which lacks nothing. Guru averts all doshas due to Grahas.

Thiruvalangudi is 19 km away from Kumbakonam. It is on the route from Kumbakonam to Mannargudi.

Uniqueness of the shrine:
It is believed that the worship of Lord Dakshinamurthy on Thursdays of every week gives all wealth to the devotee. This shrine is worshipped as the shrine of Guru. The Vinaryagar of this temple is called ' Kalangamal Katha Vinayagar'.
The History of Alangudi :
The Shrine was called Kasi Aranyam in ancient times. It is also found mentioned as Thiru Irumpoolai. Since 'Poolai' is the hole tree of the Shrine. This is praised  Grumpoolai. The Lord Siva drank the poison that issued from the ocean of milk. In memory of which the name Alangudi is given to this shrine of Lord Siva.

Vasishteswarasswmy Temple (Guru Sthalam Near Thanjavur)

Important temple for Guru is at Thittai-Sri.Vasishteswarasswmy temple, near Thanjavur.  Here the specality is that a separate temple inside the main temple for guru. The Word Thittai means “Thittu”  or “Medu” in Tamil which means a mound

Another unique feature of the temple is that drops of water fall on the Lingam from above on every twenty minutes.  It is said that this is because of the presence of the precious stones called “Surya kantha Kal” in the vimana which absorb moisture from air and create water in them and drops this water in Lingam.   So, this is also a Guru Parihara Sthalam.

Viyazha Someswar Temple  (Guru Sthalam at Kumbakonam)

Someswara temple is situated in the southern portion of Sri Sarangapani Temple. Lord Chandran did penance in this temple to get relived from his sins and got His Grace hence the name Someswar. Lord Viyazhan (Guru) got his powers by praying to this Lord and got the name of Viyazha Someswar. So, this is also a Guru Parihara Sthalam.

Medha Dakshinamurthy Temple  (Guru Sthalam at Mailaduthurai)

Vallalar Temple is one of the famous temple in mayiladuthurai town. It is located at bank of Cauvery. The main deity called Lord Vathanyeswarar  or  Vallalar with Ambal Gnanambika. This temple is also famous for lord Dhakshinamoorthy, secial poojas are conducted . He is known ‘Medha Dakshinamurthy’ who gives knowledge,wealth,health etc.. Here he is in a sitting posture with chinmudhra in right hand and holding a book in the left hand.  This is the very special Temple in Mailaduthurai. So, this is also a Guru Parihara Sthalam.
